Seaspan announced that its CEO Jonathan Whitworth has been named Business in Vancouver’s 2016 BC CEO of the Year.

Each year, Business in Vancouver – along with its partners – seek nominations for British Columbia’s most outstanding business people in private and public sector companies to honor them for their achievements.

Seaspan’s Jonathan Whitworth has been named the winner of the Enterprise Category (revenues of $500 million and above), the largest of all the awards.

“We are so proud of Jonathan and pleased his achievements and hard work are being recognized with such a prominent award,” said Kyle Washington, Seaspan Chairman. “Thanks to his past history as an officer in the Merchant Marine, Jonathan is one of few vessel owners/shipyard leaders in North America who has sailed at sea and commanded a vessel. His unique experience, combined with a highly strategic approach and passion for the industry has enabled him to focus on the tactical steps to safely and efficiently run a multi-dimensional company such as Seaspan.”

Since his arrival at Seaspan in 2009, Whitworth has taken an innovative approach to transforming the 130-year old company, by focusing on preserving the core of its historical successes while stimulating progress. Over the last six years, Seaspan has modernized its fleet and facilities, matured its operations to meet international standards and invested in technology to drive optimal efficiency. In addition, the Government of Canada formed a partnership with Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards (VSY), in October 2011, to build state-of-the-art Non-Combat vessels under the National Shipbuilding Strategy for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. VSY will build up to 17 vessels, worth $7.3 billion CDN, over the next 10 to 15 years.

“The future of Seaspan is brighter and stronger than ever before,” said Nancy McKenzie, Seaspan Chief Financial Officer. “This has a direct correlation to the leadership, passion and dedication of our truly visionary CEO.”
