The scholarships aim to nurture young talents in the shipping industry.

Sailors’ Society awarded its MaritimeONE Scholarships at a ceremony held at the Conrad Centennial Singapore Hotel on August 13.

Amalina Aidal for the Diploma of Nautical Studies; and Yvonne Teo for the Diploma in Marine Engineering, were presented with scholarships by Sailors’ Society’s regional development manager Gavin Lim.

The S$10,000 three-year scholarships will cover the cost of Amalina and Yvonne’s diplomas and Sailors’ Society will award up to four scholarships annually on the courses run at the Singapore Maritime Academy (Singapore Polytechnic), followed by three-years of sailing time.

Gavin Lim, regional development manager Asia said, “We are very pleased to be part of the Maritime Port Authority's ongoing initiative to promote seafaring as a worthwhile career. We see this as part of our long-term commitment in fulfilling our mission to provide education opportunities for aspiring seafarers and look forward to them being caring leaders in the future.”

The MaritimeONE Scholarship Program is the Singapore Maritime Academy’s flagship outreach and talent development initiative and sets out to encourage students to pursue maritime-related courses, paving the way for a rewarding maritime industry career.

Yvonne said, “By receiving this scholarship, I will get a chance to fulfill my aspirations of joining the Maritime Industry with aims to be a Chief Engineer and/or a Naval Architect.”

The next round of applications open in April/May 2016, and Sailors’ Society will award up to four scholarships.
