The partnership between the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) has been enhanced to support the professional development of seagoing engineers.
According to IMarEST , the partnership sees the RFA internal Career Level Framework for engineer officers and ratings accredited by the IMarEST, matching levels of competence and career levels to appropriate grades of IMarEST membership and professional qualifications (such as becoming Chartered).
Both seagoing and shore-based staff will be further supported with professional development, and puts them on the path to obtaining additional professional qualifications, as well as gaining access to the IMarEST’s resources including an powerful online virtual library, monthly membership magazine, technical events and a growing branch network.
Captain Richard Graham, RFA Manpower Program Team Leader commented; “This is a really important initiative for us and further demonstrates our commitment to provide excellent training and career opportunities for both seagoing and shore-based marine engineers.”
The civilian-manned RFA delivers worldwide logistical and operational support for the wide range of tasks the Royal Navy undertakes including warfighting, counter-piracy, humanitarian and disaster relief, and counter-narcotics operations.
Ben Saunders, Director of Professional Development for the IMarEST added, “A partnership like this is really important as it also highlights that you don’t have to have formal academic qualifications to become chartered – you can use your experience.”
The IMarEST and the RFA will jointly work on a similar program for deck officers and ratings, providing routes to Chartered Status for non-engineering professions.
