Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) has announced it is to renew its partnership with the Institute for Marine Engineering Science and Technology (IMarEST).

The year-long partnership will see the Institute and PML working together to encourage career development among the laboratory’s 166 employees, as well as boost its profile among the international marine community.

PML, which develops integrated marine science to promote sustainable oceans, will also have access to the IMarEST’s vast global information resources and industry networks.

PML’s CEO, Prof. Stephen de Mora, commented: "I am delighted that Plymouth Marine Laboratory and IMarEST will be working much more closely together in the future and this partnership is the perfect vehicle for making that happen. Our two organisations have much in common and our interests run parallel. In particular, I look forward to collaborating with the Institute on a number of fronts including ballast water, biofouling and offshore energy technologies each of which brings its own issues and challenges.

“PML's world- class research into ballast water monitoring is already being put into practice in the shipping industry, while biofouling studies have found very practical applications in a range of offshore technologies. PML has an excellent reputation for making its science economically and societally relevant while the health of the ocean remains our primary driver. This partnership will strengthen our links with industry, while providing a sound scientific basis on issues of mutual interest."

The partnership will allow PML to share its technical knowledge among the wider marine industry via the Institute – which counts 15,000 marine professionals from more than 100 countries among its members.

All PML’s 50 hosted students will become recognized as Student Members of the Institute (SIMarEST) and have access to professional support from the Institute throughout their careers in the marine industry.

IMarEST’s Head of Partnering Steve Bodie, said: “We have enjoyed a lasting relationship with PML and the renewal of their Corporate Marine Partnership will also ensure the continued inclusion of their valued technical knowledge within the marine community through IMarEST’s many channels. Getting people on the road to record their professional development is a key feature of this partnership, and one that includes students becoming recognized as Student Members of the Institute.”

Since it was founded almost 40 years ago on its current site on the Hoe, PML has established a globally recognised reputation for scientific excellence. At any one time it is involved in a portfolio of more than 80 commissioned research projects.

Recent analysis by Thomson Reuters reported PML outperformed all other UK environmental science providers in terms of the impact of its research.
