Maersk Gallant’s Yard Stay on Local Businesses is Conspicuous

July 13, 2014

In early May this year, Mærsk Gallant arrived at Lindø Industipark in Odense, where Fayard A/S is in charge of renovating the rig – an undertaking that generates 500 jobs in the community. According to the local tourist agency in Kerteminde, a town nearby Lindø Industripark, the effects of Maersk Gallant’s yard stay on local businesses are conspicuous. One of the most visible impacts is derived from accommodating people working on the rig-upgrade.

One of the local businesses that has experienced a positive impact from the activities at Lindø Industripark in general, but especially from Mærsk Gallant’s yard stay, is Kerteminde Byferie.

“Our peak-season has been prolonged considerably because people involved in the rig-upgrade needs housing. Our facilities are in high demand as we offer spacious apartments with fully equipped kitchens where people can bring their families and feel at home”, says Manager Hans Andersen.

Besides hotel- and apartment bookings, the local tourist agency assists with inspiration for leisure time activities to the employees and their families. “We have especially felt the impact of the yard stay on the local community during the off-season period. This counts e.g. increased activity in local restaurants, supermarkets, and specialty stores”, Project Coordinator Sanne Brigsted explains.

Value added to Northern Jutland in 2011

In connection to Maersk Guardian’s 94-day yard stay in Hirtshals in 2011, also conducted by Fayard A/S, a report was published by the port of Hirtshals, in cooperation with University of Southern Denmark and Gemba Seafood Consulting. The report documented ample added value in the local community;

Extra revenue amounted to USD 6.54 million in Northern Jutland An additional USD 29.64 million in revenue was achieved by local companies in the region Additional tax income to the municipalities in the region amounted to USD 1.92 million

Maersk Drilling has six yard stays scheduled for 2014

Every five years, Maersk Drilling’s rigs are transported to shore for inspection, maintenance and upgrade. Mærsk Gallant is one of six Maersk Drilling rigs, scheduled for yard stays in 2014. The contract value of the 75 days long yard stay of Mærsk Gallant is approximately USD 100 million. It generates 500 jobs, extra revenue to local businesses, the city and the region, as well as additional tax income to municipalities.
