Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced that its AMSEC LLC subsidiary has promoted Ryan Norris to director of strategic planning and business development.

In this capacity, Norris will be responsible for leading and executing AMSEC’s strategic planning, business development, capture, proposal and marketing activities in support of business growth. Norris will report directly to Harris Leonard, vice president of HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division and president of AMSEC operations.

Norris joined AMSEC in 2004 and has served in several management positions in San Diego and in Hampton Roads. Before joining AMSEC, he served six years as a surface warfare officer and engineering duty officer in the U.S. Navy. He served one tour on the amphibious ship USS Mount Vernon (LSD 39) and subsequently supervised ship repair availabilities and overhauls as project officer for four HII-built ships: the amphibious ships USS Tarawa (LHA 1) and USS Belleau Wood (LHA 3) and the cruisers USS Princeton (CG 59) and USS Lake Champlain (CG 57).

Norris earned a bachelor’s degree in systems engineering from the United States Naval Academy and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During his time at MIT, he completed a two-year fellowship at the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory’s Intelligent Unmanned Vehicle Center.
