New Harbormaster for Port of Taharoa
Maritime New Zealand has appointed Captain Jon Peters as harbormaster for the Port of Taharoa, replacing Maritime NZ staff member Capt. Richard Lough, who held the role on a temporary basis. Capt. Peters brings to the role more than 25 years’ maritime experience, including working as a cargo superintendent, ship agency manager, ship surveyor and cargo terminal manager. Most recently, he was General Manager of a multi-cargo ship terminal in West Africa, handling around 230 ships a year. Maritime Sector Gets on Board with HSWA
4, 2016. “Many maritime operators have a head start because they’ve entered the Maritime Operator Safety System (MOSS), which covers off a number of the new HSWA requirements. A worldwide shortage of more than 42,500 ship officers is expected by 2019, prompting New Zealand’s maritime industry and Maritime NZ to collaborate in an effort to encourage young people to train for maritime careers.
