Fifty-five new apprentices were ceremoniously welcomed at container shipper Hapag-Lloyd’s headquarters in Hamburg Monday as the young men and women prepare to begin their careers in the maritime field.

“Hapag-Lloyd is Germany’s largest training provider in the shipping industry,” said Hapag-Lloyd Chief Executive Officer, Rolf Habben Jansen. “Each of the 55 new apprentices represents a valuable investment in the future of our company.”

A total of 229 apprentices are presently employed by Hapag-Lloyd, of whom 122 are based on shore while the other 107 are in the marine division. Around 90 percent of all graduates will be offered employment at Hapag-Lloyd after completing their training.

Of the 55 new apprentices, 33 are starting their training to become shipping agents, forwarding and logistics clerks, and office management clerks (17 men and 16 women). They will also begin the combined vocational training and degree programs of logistics management, business administration, maritime management, information systems and applied informatics.

The 22 apprentices in the marine division (20 men and two women) will complete a training course to be ship mechanics or a course to become a nautical or technical officer’s assistant as a prerequisite for completing studies in nautical science or shipping technology.

A further 14 young people will begin their training to become ship mechanics at Hapag-Lloyd in December.
