UK Shipping Seeks to Double Seafarer Training Fund

 The UK Chamber of Shipping, with backing from 40 shipping companies, has this week written to the Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling, asking the Government to double the amount of funding available for seafarer training as soon as possible.    The letter was also sent to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond and the Minister of State, Department for Transport, John Hayes.    The UK Chamber, in conjunction with Nautilus International, has submitted a proposal for the Government's existing Support for Maritime Training (SMarT) scheme to be extended.

Gazprom Sets Up New Department

  Gazprom set up a new department to be headed by Pavel Krylov. The department will be in charge of implementing the Gazprom corporate unified technical policy in search, creation and introduction of state-of-the-art solutions, equipment and materials acknowledged worldwide, including substitutes of their non-domestic counterparts, with a view to secure the Company’s technological independence. Vitaly Markelov, Deputy Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee will supervise the new department.

Louisiana Shipbuilder Fined for Worker Retaliation

The U.S. Department of Justice has reached an agreement with a Louisiana shipbuilder resolving a complaint filed with the department’s Office of Special Counsel for Immigration-Related Unfair Employment Practices (OSC), claiming the company had retaliated against an individual for filing a discrimination charge with OSC.   A Justice Department said its investigation determined that North American Shipbuilding LLC, a division of Edison Chouest Offshore located in Larose, Louisiana, had retaliated against an employee for filing a charge with OSC by, among other things, barring him from the
